My Safe Florida Home Grant 2026: Up to $10,000 for Hurricane Shutters

Florida will pay $2 for every $1 you spend hardening your home — and hurricane shutters qualify. Here’s how it works and how to apply.

If you’ve been putting off hurricane shutters because of the price, the State of Florida’s My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program can cover a big share of the cost — it pays $2 for every $1 you spend on approved hardening, up to $10,000. Here’s the plain-English guide for Tampa Bay homeowners.

How the grant works

The program has two parts:

  1. A free wind-mitigation inspection of your home, which identifies the improvements that will best protect it.
  2. A matching grant — the state reimburses $2 for every $1 you put in, up to a $10,000 state contribution, toward approved upgrades. Code-compliant hurricane shutters are an eligible upgrade.

💡 What that means in dollars: if your eligible project costs $15,000, your share could be as little as $5,000 with the state covering $10,000 — turning a major expense into a manageable one.

Do you qualify?

As of 2026, a home generally qualifies if it meets all of the following:

The current cycle prioritizes income-qualifying applicants (generally below 80% of the area median income) and seniors, so those applications may be approved first. Funding is limited and awarded while it lasts.

How shutters fit in

Hurricane shutters that carry Florida Product Approval and meet the wind-zone requirement for your area (150 mph in much of coastal Pinellas/Tampa Bay) are eligible upgrades under the grant. Two things to know:

How to apply (step by step)

  1. Apply at the official sitemysafeflhome.com. This is the only official application; the program is run by the State of Florida.
  2. Get your free wind-mitigation inspection once accepted.
  3. Choose an approved contractor to install your code-compliant shutters.
  4. Complete the work and submit for your $2-for-$1 reimbursement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the My Safe Florida Home program still available in 2026?

Yes. The program reopened in August 2025 with $352 million, and Florida’s 2026–2027 budget reappropriates several hundred million more in unused funds. Funding is limited and awarded while it lasts, so it pays to apply early at mysafeflhome.com.

Can I use the grant for hurricane shutters specifically?

Yes. Hurricane shutters that carry Florida Product Approval and meet your area’s wind-zone requirement are eligible upgrades. The free inspection identifies which of your openings qualify for funding.

How much money can I get?

The state reimburses $2 for every $1 you spend on approved improvements, up to a $10,000 state contribution. So a qualifying homeowner who spends $5,000 could receive up to $10,000 toward the project.

What if my home is worth more than $500,000?

As of 2026, the program is generally limited to homes valued at $500,000 or less (just/assessed value). Rules can change each year, so confirm the current threshold at mysafeflhome.com.

Does Storm X Protection apply to the grant for me?

You apply directly through the official program at mysafeflhome.com — we are an installer, not part of the State program. What we do is install grant-eligible, code-compliant shutters and provide the quote and documentation you need for your project.
